When to Visit Victoria Falls: A Month-by-Month Guide

June to August balances strong flow with clear views; March and April bring peak flood and heavy spray; late August to December is low water, when Devil's Pool and the full rafting run open.

Short answer

For the best balance of a full curtain of water and views you can actually see, visit Victoria Falls between June and August. The Zambezi is still running strongly after its peak, the spray has eased enough to reveal the gorge, and the days are dry and mild. Come in March or April if you want the falls at their most powerful and do not mind getting soaked, or between late August and December if swimming at Devil's Pool and rafting the full run of rapids matter more to you than volume. Victoria Falls is open all year, but it is a very different place in April than in November.

Why the timing matters

The falls follow the river, not the local weather. Rain falls here between November and April, yet the Zambezi rises slowly as water drains down from its upper catchment, so the river peaks at the end of the wet season and keeps falling through the dry months that follow. Zambia's tourism board puts the peak flood at around March and April, and the lowest water at around November and December, when parts of the falls shrink to thin streams over bare rock.

The Zambezi River Authority, which measures the flow at Victoria Falls, describes three seasons: hot and wet from November to April, cool and dry until July, then hot and dry from August to October. Those three seasons, set against the lag in the river, explain every row of the table below.

Month by month

Water levels shift from year to year, so treat the months as a guide and the pattern as reliable.

MonthWeatherThe falls and what's openVerdict
JanuaryHot, humid, frequent rainRiver rising from its low; Devil's Pool usually closes around the middle of the month; all rapids usually raftableGreen and quiet, changeable
FebruaryHot and wetFlow building quickly; lunar rainbow season begins at full moonGood for volume, pack a rain jacket
MarchWarm, rain easing late in the monthAround peak flood; heavy spray; Livingstone Island closes; rafting shortened to the lower rapidsMaximum power, limited visibility
AprilWarm days, rain endingAround peak flood; you will be drenched on the viewpoint pathsSpectacular from the air, wet on foot
MayDry, coolingStill very high; spray remains heavy; rafting on the shortened runPowerful, starting to clear
JuneDry, mild days, cool nightsStrong flow with clearer views; Livingstone Island reopens around mid-month in some yearsExcellent all-rounder
JulyDry and cool, bring a warm layer for eveningsFull-width falls and good visibility; full rafting run returning as the river dropsExcellent all-rounder
AugustDry and warmingFlow easing; Devil's Pool usually opens from around mid-month; the end of the best lunar rainbow monthsVery good, the most options at once
SeptemberHot and dryLower water, with the better views from the Zimbabwean side; all rapids usually raftableBest for activities
OctoberThe hottest month, highs in the mid 30s °CParts of the falls dry up; Zimbabwean side still flowingActivities yes, volume no
NovemberHot, first rainsAround the lowest water of the yearLowest flow; Devil's Pool open, water permitting
DecemberHot and wetLow water, slowly rising with the rainsQuiet and green, thin falls

The best months for specific interests

Seeing the falls at full power

March and April deliver the greatest volume. The trade-off is visibility: so much spray rises from the gorge that you cannot take in the full width on foot, and the paths through the rainforest feel like walking through a storm. A helicopter flight is the clearest way to appreciate the scale at this time of year. If you would rather see the falls than feel them, wait until June or July.

Devil's Pool and Livingstone Island

Devil's Pool, the natural rock pool on the lip of the falls, is reached from Livingstone Island on the Zambian side and only opens when the river is low enough. Guidebook and tourism-board sources agree on roughly mid-August to mid-January, always depending on the water level in that particular year. Livingstone Island itself is closed during high water, from around March until May or mid-June. If the pool is the reason for your trip, plan for September to December and keep your dates flexible.

White-water rafting

Rafting runs through the gorge below the falls and changes with the river. At low water, from about June to February, all 23 rapids are usually navigable. At high water, generally March to July, only the last 13 rapids are attempted. The two periods overlap in June and July because the changeover depends on the year, so ask us what is running before you fix dates. Travellers who come mainly for the river should look at adventure trips timed for August to December.

The lunar rainbow

On clear nights around the full moon, the spray produces a rainbow by moonlight. It needs plenty of water in the air, so the best chances fall with the full moons between February and August. Both the Zimbabwean and Zambian parks open in the evening on the nights around full moon for this reason. If it appeals, choose your dates from a moon calendar first and build the rest of the trip around them.

Photography and clear views

June to September gives the cleanest light: dry air, little haze from rain, and spray that frames the falls instead of hiding them. On the Zimbabwean side the Main Falls and Devil's Cataract flow all year, which makes it the safer choice for views from August onwards, when the flow on the Zambian side drops away.

When to avoid, and why

There is no month when a visit is wasted, but two periods disappoint people who arrive with the wrong expectations. October and November are the hottest weeks of the year and coincide with the lowest water, so anyone picturing an unbroken wall of water will find stretches of dry rock instead, particularly from Zambia. March and April are the opposite problem: the falls are at their most impressive, yet the viewpoints can be a white-out and the island activities are closed. Decide which version you want before you choose dates.

Planning around it

Two or three nights is enough for the viewpoints, one or two activities and a sunset on the upper river. Stay on the Zimbabwean side for the widest spread of viewpoints in every season; The Victoria Falls Hotel is the historic choice in town, with a terrace that looks across the gorge to the bridge. Our Victoria Falls Adventure itinerary can be timed for either the high-water or the low-water season, and we will tell you plainly what will and will not be running on your dates.

The falls also combine easily with a few days on safari, either elsewhere in Zimbabwe or across the border in Botswana's Chobe National Park. They pair well with the Cape too, though the seasons pull in different directions: June to August is prime time here but cool and wet in Cape Town, so September and October are the natural compromise, as our month-by-month Cape Town guide explains. Send us your dates through the inquiry form and we will suggest the timing that fits what you most want to see.
