A village built on a volcano's rim

Santorini's landscape was shaped by one of history's largest volcanic eruptions, which collapsed the centre of the original island and left the crescent-shaped caldera that defines the island today. The villages of Oia and Fira sit along the caldera's rim, their whitewashed, cube-shaped buildings and blue-domed churches forming the view most associated with the island.

Beyond the caldera view

Santorini's volcanic geology also produces its beaches, including the black-sand beach at Perissa and the red-sand beach near Akrotiri, both distinct from the pale sand more typical of the Aegean. The island's wineries take advantage of the same volcanic soil, and several offer tastings alongside caldera views. Ferries connect Santorini to Athens and other Cyclades islands, and the island's small size makes it possible to see most of the main villages within a few days, leaving time for a boat trip around the caldera itself. Managing crowds and timing

July and August bring the heaviest crowds, particularly around sunset viewpoints in Oia, along with the highest prices and the Aegean's strong meltemi winds. Sunset in Oia draws crowds nightly in peak season, and arriving well ahead of dusk, or choosing a quieter viewpoint elsewhere on the rim, is worth considering. May, June, September and October offer warmer seas, thinner crowds and steadier weather, generally making them the most comfortable months to visit.
