A city shaped by mountain and sea

Cape Town sits where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans converge near the southern tip of Africa, framed by Table Mountain and a coastline of beaches, coves and the Cape Peninsula. The mountain, reachable by cable car or on foot, dominates views across the city and provides an easy half-day outing with sweeping views over the Atlantic seaboard and the harbour.

City neighbourhoods and day trips

The city itself mixes waterfront dining and shopping around the V&A Waterfront with historic neighbourhoods such as Bo-Kaap, known for its colourful houses, and Robben Island, reachable by ferry, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Season and light

Cape Town's summer, from November to March, is warm and largely dry, ideal for beaches and hiking, though the notorious southeaster wind can pick up strongly in January. Winter, from June to August, brings rain and cooler temperatures but also the region's greenest, most dramatic landscapes and the start of the Cape's whale-watching season. The city works well as a base for a safari extension too, since several malaria-free reserves near Kruger are a short flight away, making Cape Town a natural bookend to a South Africa itinerary. Travellers with more time sometimes continue north to Victoria Falls or a Kenya safari as part of a broader multi-country African journey.
