Elephants and a mountain backdrop

Amboseli National Park sits beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, and on clear mornings the mountain's snow-capped summit provides one of Africa's most recognisable safari backdrops. The park's swamps, fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro's glaciers, sustain permanent water sources that draw large elephant herds even in the driest months, making it one of the most reliable places in Africa to see elephants at close range.

A smaller, focused park

Amboseli is considerably smaller than parks such as the Maasai Mara, which concentrates wildlife around its swamps and makes for productive, relatively compact game drives. Alongside its elephants, the park supports buffalo, giraffe, zebra and a range of birdlife around its wetlands, plus predators drawn to the same water sources. It combines naturally with the Mara or with Tsavo further south-east as part of a broader Kenya itinerary, such as our Classic Kenya Safari. The park's dried lake bed, Lake Amboseli, floods only occasionally, and its cracked white surface makes for striking photographs of elephant herds crossing in single file toward the swamps.

Best conditions for views

Kilimanjaro's summit is most often visible in the early morning before cloud builds up later in the day, and dry-season months, roughly June to October and January to February, tend to bring both clearer skies and higher concentrations of elephants around the remaining water sources as the surrounding land dries out. Maasai communities living around the park's boundary offer cultural visits similar to those available near the Mara.
