Coral atolls, overwater villas and Swahili coast island culture
The Indian Ocean spans coral atolls and Swahili coast islands, from private-island resorts to centuries-old trading towns.
The Indian Ocean region in SafiriFlow's programme spans two very different island worlds: the coral atolls of the Maldives, ringed by lagoons and reef, and Zanzibar's archipelago off the Tanzanian coast, shaped by centuries of Swahili, Arab and Persian trade.
The Maldives is built almost entirely around its resorts, most occupying a single private island reached by seaplane or speedboat, with diving and snorkelling on fringing reefs as the main draw. Zanzibar offers a different rhythm, pairing beach time with the historic alleys of Stone Town and easy access to the East African mainland.
Both destinations sit in the tropics and follow monsoon-driven wet and dry seasons rather than four-season weather. The Maldives is generally driest and calmest from December to April, while Zanzibar's best windows fall between June and October and again from December to February, avoiding the long rains of March to May.
