This itinerary opens in Athens, where two days allow time for the Acropolis and its museum, the old Plaka district and the wider city's layered history, before a short flight brings you to Santorini. The island section is built around its landscape as much as its towns, with time to walk between Fira and Oia along the caldera rim and to watch the light change over the volcano at sunset.

A half-day boat trip out to the volcanic islets and hot springs breaks up the villages, and an afternoon is set aside for wine tasting at a vineyard grown in the island's distinctive volcanic soil. The final days are left unstructured, suited to travellers who want to choose their own pace between beach clubs, cliffside cafés and quiet walks through Oia's whitewashed lanes.

Staying in a cave hotel carved into the caldera cliff for the island portion, this trip works equally well as a honeymoon or a considered first visit to Greece.
